EMAIL SPEAKER PELOSI: PASS NATIONAL PAID FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE
Congress is negotiating the next big economic recovery package as we speak—and Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leading negotiations. This is our best chance to make sure they pass a national paid family and medical leave program.
Today, 1 in 3 Americans lack access to a single day of paid leave to care for themselves or their loved ones. That’s 113 million people, overwhelmingly women, communities of color, and low-wage working families. 1 in 4 women go back to work 2 weeks after giving birth to a child. President Biden and leaders in Congress have proposed a new paid leave program that would change that, providing up to 12 weeks of parental, caregiving and personal medical leave to all working people. And now, they have a chance to pass paid leave as part of the next budget. But to pass paid leave for everyone, we have to make sure it’s included in the final package that Congress negotiates.
Paid leave has broad, bi-partisan support from 65% of Americans, and now Congress has the chance to make sure that nobody in the U.S. has to choose between taking care of their health or their family, and keeping their paycheck. But, it will take all of us speaking out loudly to make it happen. Too often, good policies end up on the congressional cutting room floor as a result of compromises and deals.
Speaker Pelosi is leading negotiations on the budget package now—and will be key to deciding whether to include paid leave. There has never been a more important time to make your voice heard.
