Paid Leave for U.S. (PL+US) cheers Schumer's budget resolution proposal

August 9, 2021

Earlier today, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced a budget resolution proposal and initial Senate Committee reconciliation instructions that include a historic proposal for paid family and medical leave.

Paid Leave for the U.S. (PL+US) Executive Director Molly Day released the following statement in response to today’s announcement:

"Today's budget resolution announcement and Senate Committee instructions make it clear that Congressional leadership is prioritizing the creation of a national paid family and medical leave program, moving us one step closer to becoming a country in which all working people know they won’t need to choose between their paycheck and caring for the people they love during life's most challenging moments.

"As we continue to work our way through the COVID-19 crisis, we have a historic opportunity to rebuild our country and economy so that it works for everyone, not just those at the top. Paid leave is critical to building back better -- it’s good for working families, businesses large and small, and for our country's long-term economic growth. We're committed to ensuring that the legislation that reaches President Biden’s desk in the months ahead includes a comprehensive national paid leave program." -- Molly Day, Executive Director, Paid Leave for the U.S. (PL+US)

State Treasurers call on Congress to pass paid family leave

The signers include the State Treasurers of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The letter, organized by Paid Leave for the United States (PL+US) and For the Long Term, cites broad support for paid leave from the business community and makes it clear that the United State’s position as “the only high-income country that does not have a national paid leave public policy in place” creates “tremendous risks” for the economy, especially in the wake of the COVID crisis. Without a federal policy in place, only nine states and the District of Columbia, have paid leave programs in place, which leaves a patchwork of state programs and the overwhelming majority of states’ finances and investments vulnerable to potential investment losses and operational risks.

Statement from PL+US on Daunte Wright

We are heartbroken for the Minneapolis community. As we watch the trial unfold for George Floyd’s murder, miles away, Daunte Wright, another Black man, was killed during a traffic stop by police.

The work that we are doing together to make this country a place where all families can thrive is inextricably linked to dismantling racism in America. We continue to be outraged by the killings of Daunte Wright, George Floyd, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless Black deaths at the hands of systemic racism.

Statement from PL+US on Atlanta Shootings, in Solidarity with AAPI Communities

Statement from PL+US on Atlanta Shootings, in Solidarity with AAPI Communities

We are heartbroken by the shootings that occurred in Atlanta yesterday, leading to the murder of eight people, including six Asian American women. While details are still emerging, the broader context in which these crimes occurred must not be ignored. For the last year, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities nationwide have faced an alarming and traumatic rise in violence linked to coronavirus-related xenophobia and systemic racism.

At PL+US, we know that this growing violence against AAPI communities occurs in the backdrop of a pandemic that has had a devastating impact on women, particularly Black, Latina, and Asian women. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stop AAPI Hate has received over 3,800 self-reported incidents of Anti-Asian racism, with AAPI women being twice as likely to report incidents as men.

To our friends, family, and allies in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, all of us at PL+US see your pain, hear your struggles, and share your commitment to uniting against Anti-Asian hate and violence everywhere.

5 Years of PL+US: Impact, Innovation and Awesomeness

5 Years of PL+US: Impact, Innovation and Awesomeness

February 25, 2021
By Katie Bethell

In September of 2015, PL+US was a one-pager - just an idea. By the following February, with the help of an incredible crew of passionate fighters for social justice, we launched PL+US and PL+US Action, and I assumed the role of Executive Director of this ambitious project to win high quality paid family leave for everyone in the United States.

We started with a kernel of an idea, recognition of a need in the movement and an opportunity to shape a new future for families in this country. Now, five years later with nearly 25 team members, an incredible board, a supporter base of over half a million, and having expanded paid leave for 8.5 million people nationwide, I’m so proud of everything we’ve built and accomplished so far.
